This year, the CIPP are focusing on the reasons why payroll professionals #choosepayroll. With this in mind, we’ve asked Marcus, Joanne, Sam and Ashleigh from the EKW Group team what they enjoy about their chosen career…

Marcus, Payroll Specialist

“I chose payroll after it was sold to me by a friend. I’ve always been a perfectionist at heart and enjoyed the art of problem solving. Payroll means I can combine these qualities and improve the business’ service for a number of clients by making sure everything is right and explained to avoid unnecessary workload. Payroll as a concept may seem…mundane. However, once you come to terms with all its quirks & queries it really is wonderful. At the end of the day, you’re helping both big & small companies thrive in a vital part of their businesses. Not to mention the rapport you’re able to build from the smallest interactions – providing you’re able to utilise customer service, passion and knowledge about all things Payroll.”

“In my last job, I often had colleagues approaching me with queries over their pay or holidays, and I tried the best I could, but it wasn’t really something I could help with. When I was made redundant from that job and was looking through all the different jobs that were available, payroll stood out to me, as I thought it would be nice to finally be able to help people with their queries as I had seen the distress that confusion over a payslip can cause. I’m also very detail-orientated, and this is a key aspect of payroll – accuracy is very important when it comes to people’s wages. “I enjoy working in payroll as I am continually challenged – each day brings something different and this variety keeps me engaged. I also like the sense of achievement when I’m able to solve a complex issue, or when I offer an explanation to a client which is well received and very helpful to them.

Sam, Payroll Senior

“I kind of fell into payroll about seven years ago. I applied for a job at a software company, not knowing that they made Payroll software. They taught me everything about payroll, and the rest – as they say – is history. Every day is different in payroll, and that’s one of the main reasons why I enjoy it so much.”

Ashleigh, Senior Payroll Administrator

“Honestly, I fell into payroll. I left college at the age of 17 as I decided I wanted to work. I found a payroll apprenticeship here at EKW Group way back in 2009 and worked my way up from there. You could say, payroll chose me! I love the variety. Every day is different, all clients are different and there’s always something to keep you busy. I enjoy the challenge and getting stuck in, whether that be on a large payroll or a tricky HMRC query. There’s something quite satisfying about resolving a query (but don’t tell anyone I admitted that). I love the clients too! You can imagine after working here for not far off 15 years I’ve managed to build some good bonds. And we can’t forget the team, we work so well together, and they really do make my working day more than enjoyable! (cheesy I know!)
